Turning our worries and problems over to God is a concept that is emphasized throughout the Bible. As Christians, we are called to trust God fully and rely on Him to handle the issues we face, rather than trying to control everything ourselves. Here are some key principles from Scripture about how we can release our anxieties to the Lord:
Acknowledge our dependence on God
The first step is recognizing that on our own, we are inadequate to face the challenges of life. We need to rely on God’s strength, wisdom and resources. As it says in John 15:5, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” When we try to tackle difficulties independently, we will often become overwhelmed. Admitting our need for God’s help and intervention is crucial.
Surrender our will to God’s will
Rather than demanding our own way, we need to submit to God’s plan for our lives. The Bible reminds us that His ways and thoughts are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8-9). Even when circumstances seem hopeless to us, God is able to act powerfully on our behalf. As James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves, then, to God.”
Trust in God’s character
We can release our worries to the Lord because He is absolutely trustworthy. God promises to work all things together for our good as we follow Him (Romans 8:28). He assures us that His grace is sufficient for every trial we face (2 Corinthians 12:9). Because He is faithful, loving and all-powerful, we can rest confidently in His hands no matter what we are facing.
Pray about everything

Take refuge in God
The book of Psalms portrays God as a strong tower and a place of refuge from trouble. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge” (Psalm 18:2). We can take shelter in Him when worries feel overwhelming. God promises to cover us and restore peace to our minds.
Obey God one step at a time
When challenges seem too big, focus on taking the next right step, rather than becoming immobilized by anxiety. As Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Obedience leads to fresh strength.
Leave outcomes up to God
Rather than obsessively worrying about how situations will turn out, we can release the results to God. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Our job is to follow His lead one day at a time.
Remember God’s faithfulness in the past
When anxietysurfaces, recall specific times when God brought you through hardship previously. The Israelites set up memorial stones to remind future generations of God’s provision (Joshua 4:6-7). Christian author Corrie ten Boom advised, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”
Fill your mind with praise
Instead of negative thinking that fuels fear, intentionally fill your mind with worship. “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice” (Psalm 34:1-2). Praising God builds our trust in Him.
Trust that God is working for good
According to Romans 8:28, God uses every circumstance to accomplish good purposes in our lives as we follow Him. We may not see the full picture from our limited human perspective. But we can believe that God will use hardships to develop our character and draw us closer to Himself.
Lean on the Holy Spirit’s power
We are never expected to overcome anxiety by our own strength. The Holy Spirit lives within every believer and provides supernatural peace, comfort, and power to endure trials. “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Trust that God hears you
God invites us to cast all our burdens on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). We can know that He hears every prayer and is moved with compassion for our troubles. “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their prayer” (1 Peter 3:12). He truly listens and responds.
Rely on God’s presence
No matter what challenges we face, we are never alone because God promises to be with us always. “‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). His presence brings comfort and strength.
Keep an eternal perspective
Earthly anxieties are put in perspective when we remember that this life is brief compared to eternity with God. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:16-17).
Seek righteousness and wisdom
Many anxieties arise when we compromise godly principles and make foolish choices. But as Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Staying aligned with God’s wisdom prevents many problems.
Ask God for deliverance
Throughout the Psalms, David continually cries out for God to rescue him from oppressive fears. “Turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and in deep distress. I am worn out from sobbing. Oh Lord, I am overwhelmed; come to my aid!” (Psalm 69:16-18). We can boldly ask God for help.
Choose to rejoice and give thanks
Deliberately focusing on rejoicing rather than worrying demonstrates trust in God’s sovereignty. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Thanking God in the midst of troubles also expresses faith. “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Cast your cares on the Lord
1 Peter 5:7 tells us directly, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Unloading our heavy burdens onto Christ every day brings relief from worry. Like the hymn says, “What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!”
