Jesus Christ is the central figure of Christianity. As the Son of God, Jesus came to earth to teach people about God’s love and redeem humankind from sin. Here are some of the core elements of Jesus’ teaching according to the Bible:
Love God and Love Your Neighbor
The most fundamental teaching of Jesus is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). This underscores putting God first and loving other people selflessly. Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God and love others.
The Kingdom of God
Jesus repeatedly spoke about the “kingdom of God” or the “kingdom of heaven.” This refers to God’s spiritual reign and authority over the hearts and lives of people who follow Him. Jesus taught that God’s kingdom has already begun on earth and will be fully established when He returns. He urged people to repent and believe in order to enter the kingdom of God (Mark 1:15).
Repentance
Repentance was a core message Jesus preached. He taught that all people need to turn away from their sins and turn to God. Repentance means having a change of heart and mind that leads to a transformed life aligned with God’s ways. Jesus said He came to call sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32).
Faith and Belief
Jesus continually stressed the importance of faith and belief in Him and God the Father. He taught that faith in Him is the only way to salvation and eternal life. Jesus rebuked those with little faith and commended people like the Roman centurion who had great faith (Matthew 8:10). He taught people to have childlike faith in order to receive from God.
Forgiveness of Sins
Central to Jesus’ teaching is that He came to bring forgiveness of sins through His sacrificial death on the cross. He told people their sins were forgiven because of their faith in Him (Luke 7:48-50). Jesus had the authority to forgive sins, which is why He willingly gave up His life as payment for humankind’s sins (Matthew 26:28).
Deny Yourself, Take Up Your Cross
Jesus taught that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). This conveys the costs of discipleship. His followers must put aside selfish interests, be willing to suffer for the sake of the Gospel, and pursue holiness and obedience to Christ.
The Golden Rule
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). This famous teaching of Jesus is to treat other people the way you want to be treated. It emphasizes selfless love, mercy, compassion, and kindness to all people.
Death and Resurrection
Jesus repeatedly predicted and taught about His death and resurrection throughout His ministry (Mark 8:31, Matthew 16:21, Luke 9:22). He made clear that He came to die on the cross to pay for sins, and would rise again by the power of God. His resurrection proved His divinity and victory over sin and death.
Second Coming
In His Olivet Discourse, Jesus taught a great deal about His second coming (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21). He said He will one day return to judge the living and the dead, and reign forever over a restored creation. He told His disciples to be prepared and watchful for His return at any time.
Set Free from Sin
Jesus taught that anyone who commits sin is a slave to sin (John 8:34). He offered freedom from sin’s control and condemnation through faith in Him. His death makes possible forgiveness of sins and new life in Him. Turning from sin begins with recognizing one’s sinfulness.
Grace and Truth
Jesus was full of both grace and truth (John 1:14). His teachings confronted people’s sins with truth, but offered God’s grace and mercy to forgive, heal, and restore. He taught profound truths with authority, but had compassion on the hurting and downtrodden.
Value of Human Life
Jesus’s teachings affirmed the intrinsic worth of human life. He healed multitudes of people, restoring them to wholeness. He had compassion on outcasts, women, children, tax collectors, prostitutes, and others marginalized in society. Jesus valued everyone and gave dignity to all.
Do Not Judge
“Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1). Jesus commanded His followers not to be hypocritical or condemning of others’ sins, but rather be humble and see one’s own faults first. He taught to judge ourselves rightly according to God’s standards of righteousness.
Power of Prayer
Jesus taught His disciples how to pray using the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). He emphasized having a private prayer life full of humility, praise and thanksgiving. Jesus said God rewards and responds to those who diligently seek Him in prayer with right motives.
Generosity
Jesus emphasized giving generously to the poor and those in need (Luke 6:38, Luke 21:1-4). He taught that how we treat the poor reflects our love for Him. Jesus praised the sacrificial offering of the widow to God, and taught His disciples to have a generous heart of hospitality.
Wisdom and Discernment
Jesus taught that having wisdom and discernment comes from having an intimate relationship with God (Luke 10:21-24). He often expressed gratitude to God for revealing spiritual truth to His followers rather than the “wise and learned.” He valued childlike trust in God.
Do Not Worry
“Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body…” (Matthew 6:25). Jesus taught that in place of anxiety, His followers should seek the kingdom of God first. He promised that God will provide for needs if we trust in Him.
Listen to Jesus
At the Transfiguration, God said “This is my Son, whom I love, listen to Him!” (Mark 9:7). Jesus emphasized over and over that He speaks the very words of God. He repeatedly said “Whoever has ears, let them hear” (Matthew 11:15). His words have divine authority.
Obedience to God
Throughout His ministry, Jesus emphasized hearing and obeying the Word of God. He rebuked the Pharisees for elevating their traditions above God’s commands (Mark 7:8-9). Jesus taught that obedience to God’s Word is essential for those who love Him.
