As Christians, our identity and self-worth should be rooted in who we are in Christ. The Bible tells us that when we put our faith in Jesus, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). Here are some key truths about who we are in Christ according to Scripture:
I am a child of God
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). When we receive Christ, we are adopted into God’s family. We can come boldly to God and call him our Father (Romans 8:15). He loves us and cares for us as his own children.
I am a friend of Christ
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you (John 15:15). Jesus calls us friends, not servants. He shares freely with us all that the Father has revealed to him.
I am a joint heir with Christ
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him (Romans 8:16-17). As God’s children, we share in Christ’s inheritance – eternal life and blessings from God.
I am a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we are in Christ, we become completely new persons spiritually. Our sins are forgiven and we are made righteous before God.
I am chosen and dearly loved
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will (Ephesians 1:4-5). God chose us and loves us. He predestined us to be adopted as His children even before creation.
I am redeemed
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7). We have redemption through Christ’s blood. Our sins are forgiven according to God’s grace.
I am righteous and holy
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Christ took our sins so that we might receive His righteousness. As believers, we are made righteous before God through Christ.
I am a citizen of heaven
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20). Our permanent home is in heaven. We await our Savior to return and take us there.
I am hidden with Christ in God
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). As believers, our lives are hidden with Christ. Though we live on earth, our lives are secure with Him.
I am victorious
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37). Through Christ we are more than conquerors. In Him we overcome sin, death and all forces of evil.
I am complete in Christ
And in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority (Colossians 2:10). As Christians we are made complete in Christ, who has authority over all.
I am a temple of the Holy Spirit
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Spirit of God dwells in every believer. Our bodies are His temple.
I am assured of eternal life
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Eternal life begins at the moment of our conversion. We can be assured of salvation.
This is just a sampling of the many profound truths about who we are in Christ. As we study the Bible, we find our true identity. We are His beloved children, chosen to bear His image, redeemed by His blood and filled with His Spirit. This knowledge leads us to live joyfully and walk confidently in who we are by His grace.
I am not condemned
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2). As believers, we are no longer under condemnation. The blood of Christ has freed us from condemnation.
I am being transformed
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18). God is at work transforming believers to be more like Christ through the Spirit. This transformation continues throughout our life.
I am more than a conqueror
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37). Because of Christ’s love, we are more than conquerors in the face of life’s trials, not victims. His power enables us to overcome.
I am God’s workmanship
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). We are not saved by good works; but created by God to do good for His glory.
I am seated with Christ
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). Our position before God is seated with Christ in the heavenlies, above all powers and authorities.
I am the salt of the earth
“You are the salt of the earth… ” (Matthew 5:13). As believers, we have a preservative influence. Our lives add flavor to the world and curb corruption.
I am the light of the world
“You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Followers of Christ illuminate and brighten this dark world by reflecting Christ’s light.
I am a branch of the true vine
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit” (John 15:5). We have no life apart from Christ. But connected to him, we bear fruit.
I am chosen and appointed by Christ
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit…” (John 15:16). We did not choose Christ, but he chose and appointed us to bear lasting fruit.
I am a personal witness of Christ
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8). Every believer is called to be a witness of Christ, empowered by the Spirit.
I am a saint
To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people… (Romans 1:7). A saint is one declared holy by God through faith in Christ. All believers are saints.
I am a citizen of heaven
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 3:20). Our affiliation is with heaven, not earth. Our hope is in Christ’s return for us.
I am a servant of righteousness
But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness (Romans 6:17-18). Believers are no longer enslaved to sin but to righteousness in Christ.
I am a prisoner of Christ
Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus… (Ephesians 3:1). Paul saw himself as a prisoner of Christ – one whose life was completely under Christ’s control.
I am hidden with Christ in God
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). In God’s eyes, believers are hidden in Christ – their lives secure in him.
I am born of God
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God… (1 John 5:1). We are God’s children, born again by His Spirit into His family.
I am a new creature
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17). In Christ, believers are completely renewed and transformed persons.
I am delivered from the power of darkness
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves (Colossians 1:13). Christ’s death frees us from the power of darkness into light.
I am partaker of his promise
…so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires (2 Peter 1:4). God’s promises allow us to participate in His nature and escape worldly corruption.
I am the “temple of the living God”
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Spirit of God dwells in every believer individually and corporately.
I am a minister of reconciliation
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: (2 Corinthians 5:18). Every believer has been given the ministry of reconciliation – restoring others to God.
I am alive with Christ
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life (Romans 6:4). Every Christian has new life through Jesus’ resurrection.
I am no longer condemned
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The blood of Christ has freed believers from condemnation.
I am a son of God
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God (Romans 8:14). Believers filled with God’s Spirit are His beloved children.
I am a heir of eternal life
To an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you. (1 Peter 1:4). Eternal life is a future inheritance for every believer.
This is just a sample of the many precious truths about who we are in Christ as revealed in Scripture. As dearly loved children of God, we can walk confidently in our God-given identity, knowing these truths define who we are in Him. Our position is secure in Christ and we have been given everything needed to live abundantly for His glory.
I am a member of Christ’s body
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (1 Corinthians 12:27). All believers are united together in Christ’s one body, the church.
I am a saint
To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people… (Romans 1:7). A saint is one declared holy by God – all believers are saints.
I am an ambassador of Christ
We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:20). Believers represent Christ to the world as His ambassadors.
I am the righteousness of God
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21). Through faith in Christ, believers become righteous before God.
I am the temple of the Holy Spirit
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Corinthians 3:16). The Holy Spirit lives in every believer individually and corporately.
I am a slave to righteousness
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22). Believers are no longer slaves to sin but to righteous obedience.
I am a child of light
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. (1 Thessalonians 5:5). Light, not darkness, dwells in Christ’s children.
I am chosen by God
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. (Ephesians 1:4). God chose every believer even before the world began.
I am sealed with the Holy Spirit
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). The Spirit marks believers as belonging to Christ.
I am blessed
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3). Every spiritual blessing already belongs to each believer in Christ.
I am a fruitful branch
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5). As believers remain in Christ, they produce spiritual fruit.
I am chosen and appointed by Christ
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit, fruit that will last…” (John 15:16). Jesus personally chose and appointed believers to go and bear fruit.
I am a child of promise
Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise. (Galatians 4:28). Every believer is a recipient of God’s gracious promises in Christ.
