In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Christ as the light shows us God’s perfect truth and way. When we start to follow Him, our perspectives change. Things make sense in a new way and we have hope.
Further, Psalm 119:105 tells us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s Word provides practical guidance and wisdom for every situation when we walk closely with God. Even when circumstances seem uncertain, the truths of Scripture light the way forward.
So the fact that God is our light shows He provides clear direction and hope. We don’t have to stumble in darkness. Even when we can’t see far ahead, we can take the next step forward knowing the Lord is lighting our path. God’s truth and presence shine in our hearts to guide us.
2. God Gives Us Salvation
The other key phrase from Psalm 27:1 is “the Lord is my salvation.” The word salvation refers to deliverance or rescue. Let’s explore the great news that God Himself saves us.
First, Romans 6:23 explains the problem: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our sin separates us from God and earns us death. But God’s free gift is eternal life through Jesus’ sacrifice.
Jesus confirmed this in John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
God saw our helpless, doomed state under sin. So in His incredible mercy, He sent Jesus to rescue us. Everyone who believes in Him for salvation receives eternal life and is saved from sin’s consequences.
Romans 5:8-9 further shows, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.” Even when we were unworthy sinners, Christ’s death proved God’s love and grace. Now that we are cleansed in Jesus, we are assured salvation from God’s wrath.

4. God Gives Us Confidence

Since we have the all-powerful, faithful God defending and guiding us, there is no person or circumstance that should cause us terror. Consider the confidence expressed in these other verses:

Once we trust in Christ, He secures us in His hands and promises eternal life. No one can undo our salvation or steal us from Jesus’ grip. We can look forward to eternity in heaven with joyful assurance because of God’s gift.
The apostle Paul echoes this confidence in Philippians 1:6 – “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” God finishes what He started! He won’t abandon us halfway. When He saved us, it was for eternity.
No matter what happens in this world, we have security in knowing Jesus purchased our eternal redemption. Our life on earth is short, but we will spend forever in heaven’s glory with Christ. Hallelujah!
6. Abiding in the Light
How do we stay continually connected to the Lord as our light, salvation, and stronghold? The key is abiding in close relationship with Him each day.
Psalm 91:1-2 tells us, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'” We must make the Lord our dwelling place and refuge.
Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” As we stay connected to Jesus like branches to a vine, we receive spiritual life and strength.
We grow closer to the Lord through reading the Bible, prayer, worship, fellowship with other believers, and obedience. These habits help us continually rely on God as our light rather than wandering into spiritual darkness and confusion.
When trials come, we can quickly run to the shelter of God’s presence. He is ready to give us grace, direction, and help as our strong tower. Abiding in Christ is the key to walking daily in the unshakeable hope and security He provides.
7. Sharing the Light
One blessing of God being our light is getting to share that light with others! Jesus called believers the light of the world in Matthew 5:14-16:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
When God’s light floods our hearts, it starts shining out to bless others. Our changed lives point people to the Savior. We get to guide people out of darkness by sharing the hope and truth we’ve found in Christ.
The psalmist was so thrilled about God’s work in his life that he proclaims in Psalm 40:9-10:
“I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation… I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.”

8. Strength for Each Day
Not only does knowing the Lord as our light and salvation give us eternal security, but it also provides strength and guidance for each day. We all face various trials, pains, heartaches, and frustrations in this fallen world. That’s why we need God’s daily comfort and help.
James 1:5 promises God will give wisdom to those who ask. So we can call out to Him for guidance and clarity when facing difficult situations and decisions where the way forward seems hazy. He will illuminate the next step.
2 Corinthians 12:9 gives us Jesus’ words to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” When we feel completely drained and powerless, God reminds us that His grace and strength are enough to carry us. His power works best when we rely fully on Him rather than ourselves.
Psalm 18:32 promises, “It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.” He empowers us with exactly what we need for each challenge we face. He will faithfully make the way forward clear as we follow Him one step at a time.
One of the greatest blessings in knowing God is our light is that we never have to navigate life alone in our limited strength and wisdom. The Lord promises to guide and uphold us each day. He is faithful, and His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).
9. Hope in Suffering
Sadly, suffering is part of life in our fallen world. Illness, poverty, natural disasters, relational brokenness, abuse, and grief afflict many people. But we can still have hope in suffering when we know God is our light.
First, our suffering has purpose in God’s hands. Romans 5:3-5 explains, “…but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” While trials are painful, God uses them to shape our character into Christ’s image.
Next, suffering draws us closer to God when we lean on Him for help in desperation. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” As we cry out to Him in our pain, He draws near to comfort us.
We also gain an eternal perspective from trials. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 contrasts present afflictions and eternal glory. Our pain is “light and momentary” compared to the “eternal weight of glory” awaiting us in heaven. As we set our eyes on eternity, our struggles seem smaller.
Most importantly, Christ suffered for us, so we never face trials alone. Hebrews 4:15-16 says Jesus understands all we go through, so we can approach His throne of grace for mercy when we need it most. Our Savior walks through suffering beside us.
