Genesis 1:27 says “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Being made in the image of God gives human life inherent value and significance. Our work, regardless of occupation, also has inherent purpose when it is done to the glory of God. Colossians 3:23-24 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” We can find meaning even in mundane day to day tasks when we see our work as service to Christ.
God also calls us to make the most of our time and opportunities while we are alive on this earth. Ephesians 5:15-16 instructs “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Life is short, so we should steward it well and maximize our potential impact for God’s kingdom.
Though God calls us to many purposes, our ultimate purpose is simply to glorify him with our lives. 1 Corinthians 10:31 declares “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Glorifying God should be the overarching goal that guides and motivates our lives.
While the Bible gives us many facets of purpose, Jesus Christ himself is the ultimate source of a meaningful life. Having a relationship with Jesus gives us an abundant life now and eternal life in the future. Jesus said in John 10:10 “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Knowing Jesus provides everlasting purpose, meaning and fulfillment.

We do this by developing Christlike character, fulfilling the Great Commission, using our gifts to serve others, engaging in fellowship with other believers, excelling in our work, making the most of our time, and most importantly cultivating a relationship with Jesus Christ. Finding purpose is an exciting adventure that requires actively seeking God’s will through scripture, prayer, wise counsel from believers, and the circumstances of life. As we walk in obedience to God’s commands and in relationship with Jesus, He will direct our paths and show us the unique and fulfilling purposes He has for our lives. We just need to daily surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Christ and walk by faith in the destiny He has prepared for us even before the foundation of the world.
