The Bible has a lot to say about our identity in Christ. As Christians, it is so important that we understand who God says we are, so that we can live in the freedom and purpose He has for us. When we know our true identity, it changes everything! Here are some of the key things the Bible tells us about who God says we are:
I am loved
One of the most fundamental truths about our identity is that we are deeply loved by God. The Bible tells us “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1). And in Jeremiah 31:3, God says “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” God’s love for us began before we were even born, and continues unconditionally throughout our lives. This truth provides a foundation for our lives – we are secure in God’s love.
I am chosen
Not only are we loved by God, but we are chosen by Him. Ephesians 1:4 says “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” God knew us and handpicked us to be part of His family, adopted as His sons and daughters. What an incredible privilege! And it has nothing to do with our own merit or goodness – God chose us simply out of His grace and sovereignty. This gives us tremendous security and significance.
I am forgiven
A major aspect of our identity in Christ is that we are completely forgiven. No matter what we have done, God’s grace is greater. 1 John 1:9 tells us “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” And in Psalm 103:12, we read “as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” We do not need to be defined by past mistakes or shame – we are made new in God’s forgiveness.
I am a child of God
Through faith in Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family. John 1:12 declares “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” God becomes our Father, and we become His sons and daughters. We get to relate to Him in the most intimate way, calling Him “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). We have a permanent place in God’s household, with all the rights and privileges that come with it.
I am redeemed
Jesus paid the ultimate price to buy us back from sin and death. 1 Peter 1:18-19 says “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” We are rescued from darkness, and the ownership of our lives has been transferred from the kingdom of this world to the Kingdom of God. We belong to Him now.
I am a new creation
When we come to faith in Christ, we are made completely new on the inside. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” God gives us a fresh start, and begins His renewing work in us. The old sinful nature passes away, and we are reborn by His Spirit, as brand new creations.
I am precious
We are so precious and valued by God that He was willing to give up His own Son to save us. 1 Peter 2:4 calls Jesus “a living stone, rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him.” If we are precious to God, then we have incredible worth that far surpasses what the world says about us. There is no need to strive – we can rest knowing God sees us as His prized possession.
I am God’s workmanship
Ephesians 2:10 declares “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We are not accidents or afterthoughts – God crafted us deliberately with creativity and purpose. He has designed us to do the good things He has planned for our lives. We can walk in confidence knowing our lives have meaning and intention.
I am victorious
As Christians, we are identified with Christ’s victory over sin and death. 1 Corinthians 15:57 proclaims “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” And in Romans 8:37 we read “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” With Jesus on our side, the enemy is already defeated. We do not need to live in fear or bondage, because our spiritual victory is secure.
I am God’s masterpiece
Not only are we God’s workmanship, but Ephesians 2:10 goes on to say we are His “poema” – an exquisite work of art, His masterpiece! God is the master artist, and He is crafting a beautiful story out of our lives. There is meaning woven through every season, adding color and texture. Our lives are God’s love letters to the world, displaying His grace and skill.
I am accepted
Through Christ, we are fully accepted by God. Jesus’ perfect sacrifice covers our imperfection, so that God sees us as flawless in His Son. Romans 15:7 says “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” Our acceptance is complete and unconditional. We don’t need to earn God’s favor – we already have it!
I am restored
Not only does God forgive us, but He also restores what has been lost. Joel 2:25 promises “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.” No matter what the enemy may have stolen, God can recreate and redeem our broken places. He takes the fragments of our lives and makes them whole. There is always hope for renewed purpose and fruitfulness.
I am God’s delight
Amazingly, God doesn’t just love us – He delights in us! Zephaniah 3:17 tells us “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” God celebrates over us with singing – what an incredible picture of His joy in us! We bring pleasure to His heart just by delighting in His love.
I am God’s ambassador
As Christians, we have the privilege of representing Christ to the world around us. 2 Corinthians 5:20 states “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” Wherever we go, we are God’s messengers, called to shine His light and demonstrate His love through our words and actions. What an honor to partner with God in His work!
I am set free
Christ came to break every chain and set us free. Galatians 5:1 encourages us “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” We no longer need to be bound by sin, fear, shame or condemnation. The price has been paid, and true liberty is ours. We get to live in the freedom we have in Jesus!
I am significant
God tells us we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matthew 5:13-14). We all have a specific role to play in God’s Kingdom purposes. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that the good works God has for us were prepared in advance for us to do. God has crafted us for significance, and our lives have meaning and eternal impact as we walk in His purposes.
I am protected
God covers us with His mighty hand of protection. Psalm 91:4 promises “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Whatever we face, we are safe in God’s care. He guards our coming and going, shielding us from harm and evil. We can rest beneath His wings, secure in His presence.
I am healed
Our Savior was broken so that we could be made whole. Isaiah 53:5 says “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” In Christ, we find complete healing for body, soul and spirit. His power is greater than any pain, addiction or infirmity we face. Wholeness is our inheritance.
I am united with Christ
As believers, we are intimately united with Jesus. 1 Corinthians 6:17 tells us “But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.” And in John 15, Jesus describes how He is the vine and we are the branches connected to Him. This union with Christ gives us constant access to His strength and sustenance flowing through us. We are secure in Him.
I am never alone
Not only is God always with us, but He assures us He will never leave us. Deuteronomy 31:6 states “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” And in Matthew 28:20, Jesus declares “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” We can fully rely on God’s presence in every season of life.
I am completed in Him
Colossians 2:10 proclaims “and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.” When we are in Christ, we lack nothing. God fills every need and deep longing in our hearts. His riches, wisdom, power and resources are made available to us, so that we are fully complete in Him. What a joy to find our satisfaction in Christ alone!
These powerful truths about who God says we are transform our lives when we embrace them fully. Our relationship with God is the source of our truest identity. As we renew our minds to align with His perspective, we experience freedom and purpose. We can boldly walk through life anchored in His unconditional love, forgiveness, and calling.
