Satan is a spiritual being who is the enemy of God and humanity. The Bible presents Satan in a variety of ways that help us understand his character, activities, and ultimate destiny.

The Bible uses several names and titles to refer to Satan which reveal aspects of his character and actions:
- Satan – meaning “adversary” or “accuser” (Job 1:6, Revelation 12:9)
- Devil – meaning “slanderer” or “accuser” (Matthew 4:1, 1 Peter 5:8)
- Serpent – referring to his appearance in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1, Revelation 12:9)
- Great dragon, ancient serpent – emphasizing his power and evil nature (Revelation 12:9)
- God of this world/age – referring to his temporary rule over the present fallen world system (2 Corinthians 4:4)

These names and titles indicate Satan’s role as an adversary to God and humans, his evil and deceptive character, his temporary authority in this fallen world system, and his connection to other spiritual forces of darkness.
Origin and Fall
Though unclear on precise details, Scripture indicates Satan was originally a holy angel created by God, but rebelled and fell from his position:
- He is implied to have been created by God as all things were created by Him (Colossians 1:16)
- He sinned at some point and departed from truth (1 John 3:8, John 8:44)
- Other angels followed him in his rebellion (Matthew 25:41, Revelation 12:4)
- His desire to exalt himself above God led to his fall (Isaiah 14:12-15, Ezekiel 28:12-19)
Thus Satan was once a holy angel, but pride and sin led to his rebellion and fall from righteousness.
Nature and Character
Scripture reveals Satan’s basic nature and character:
- He is evil, sinister, and wicked (1 John 3:12, John 8:44)
- He is deceitful and the father of lies (2 Corinthians 11:3, John 8:44)
- He disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14)
- He opposes all that is good and righteous (Zechariah 3:1, Matthew 13:38-39)
- He seeks to devour, destroy, and lead people to ruin (1 Peter 5:8, Revelation 12:9-10)
- He tempts people to sin (1 Thessalonians 3:5, Matthew 4:3)
- He ensnares and takes captive those who oppose God (2 Timothy 2:26, Revelation 20:2-3)
- He accuses believers before God (Revelation 12:10, Zechariah 3:1)
In essence, Satan is the embodiment of evil with a mission to oppose God’s plans and deceive humanity into sin and destruction.
Powers and Limitations
As a spiritual being, Satan possesses certain powers but also operates within limitations:
- He has intelligence, speaks, and schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11, Matthew 4:1-10)
- He has mobility and access to earth and heaven (Job 1:7, Revelation 12:10)
- He has influence in the world as “god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
- He has limited power over nature (Job 1:12, 1:19)
- He has authority over a host of demonic spirits (Matthew 12:24)
- He cannot force humans to sin, only tempt them (Ephesians 6:11, 1 Corinthians 10:13)
- His knowledge is limited and not omniscient like God (Isaiah 46:9-10)
- His power is limited by God’s sovereign control (Job 1:12, 2:6, Revelation 20:2-3)
Thus Satan has certain capabilities but operates only within the boundaries God permits.
Relationship to Humanity
Satan seeks to influence humanity in several key ways according to Scripture:
- He tempts humans to sin (1 Thessalonians 3:5, Genesis 3:4-5)
- He deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9)
- He ensnares people through sin (2 Timothy 2:26, Hebrews 2:14)
- He blinds minds to the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4)
- He accuses and slanders believers (Revelation 12:10, Zechariah 3:1)
- He can indwell people through demonic control (John 13:27, Luke 22:3)
- He afflicts people through bodily/mental torments (Acts 10:38, Luke 13:16)
Satan thus carries out an invisible spiritual war against humanity seeking their downfall and bondage.
Defeat and Destiny
Despite his present evil workings, Scripture is clear on Satan’s future defeat and destruction:
- Satan was defeated by Christ’s death and resurrection (Colossians 2:15, Hebrews 2:14)
- His power will be broken and restricted during Christ’s millennial reign (Revelation 20:1-3)
- He will be finally cast into the Lake of Fire forever at the end of Christ’s millennial reign (Revelation 20:7-10)
Satan’s end is sure defeat, being cut off forever from influencing God’s kingdom and new creation.
Our Response and Victory
How should believers respond to Satan’s schemes?
- Resist him through faith in Christ (1 Peter 5:8-9, James 4:7)
- Guard against his deception and lies with God’s truth (Ephesians 6:11, 6:16-17)
- Rely on Christ’s authority and the Spirit’s power for victory (Acts 26:18, 1 John 4:4)
- Put on spiritual armor including righteousness, truth, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer (Ephesians 6:10-18)
- Walk in light and holiness (1 Thessalonians 5:22-23, Romans 13:12-14)
While Satan seeks our downfall, believers can stand firm against him and experience victory in Christ.
